Its probably time to take note of this application, the number of tweets I've been seeing recently is starting to increase by people wanted to become mayor of a particular place!
Foursquare is kind of a merge between business local, Social Media, mobile and game play so it could potentially have that wow factor.
So what actually is it?
Basically its an application that you download to your mobile (iphone,Blackberry,Android) and it allows you to check in every time you visit a place,restaurant or bar and you can write reviews as you go. If you've visited a place more than anyone else (and yes that can include your supermarket / doctors surgery etc) you will become the Mayor!!
You earn points as you go so Here's how points are currently awarded: (be warned this does get tweaked from time to time)
+5 points for your first time checking-in at a venue
+5 points for adding a new venue
+1 point for per checkin, increasing by +1 with each checkin (e.g. your 1st checkin of the day is +1, 2nd checkin of the day +2 points, etc)
Clever eh? - a Social Media platform, thats local and gives an element of gameplay and competition
How can your business take advantage?
Well quite simply really especially if you've got a bar or restaurant
All you have to do is to sign up to Foursquare as a business and use their usage data to back up a loyalty scheme, so if someone becomes the mayor perhaps they could earn themselves a free drink - you get the idea!
You'll be amazed at how a little competition will keep people coming back to your establishment, and with the extra coverage on Twitter its more likely to go viral!
