There are a number of potential pitfalls you don’t want to fall into, as a guide you should seriously consider NOT using twitter if…
- You don’t know what you are trying to achieve. Far too many business owners jump in and start twittering without really thinking about why they are doing it. It is easy to get caught up in all the hype with stories like “Twitter will be THE most important marketing tool in the next two years…” This may be true for some businesses, but certainly not for all of them. You need a clear objective, the appropriate marketing tools and above all engage in the right level of activity. If not you risk getting sucked into a very addictive activity that absorbs your energy and your time leaving potentially more important thing undone.
- You don’t have a clear picture of who you want to communicate with. If you don’t know your target market, how can you communicate in a meaningful way, i.e. one that adds value to your relationship rather than damaging it? You don’t want to be one of the babblers we think anyone actually cares if they are making a cup of coffee, they are time wasters. In business you need to work on developing relationships with people you want to do business with – who are they and how could social media be used to good effect?
- You don’t want to interact with real people. Your social media strategy is very likely to fail to deliver your desired results if you try to hide behind your ‘business persona’. People buy people first – and you had better not forget it, especially in the world of Social Media.
Think of your social media strategy as a ‘virtual form of word of mouth’. What you are really looking for is for people to want to talk about you, to pass information about you to people they interact with, and depending on your objectives to refer potential clients to you. If you are a faceless corporate it won’t happen.
Act in haste, repent at leisure, remember this: what goes online stays online, once you have put something into the public domain it cannot be retracted, if it is interesting it can and it will be copied, forwarded, re-written… this applies to good news, but even more to bad news. Social Media can destroy reputations, or help build them.
Twitter is one part of the Social Media tool kit, and this in turn is just one part of the business owners marketing mix.
